Composing for a eight channels setup (8.0) is often the simple result of the marketing of tape recorders or sounds cards having… eight outputs.
Contrary to the formats related to the cinematographic industry, it does not correspond to any standard, and finally represents only a particular case among all the range of multiphonic possibilities, but its current employment justifies the presentation of a category of its own…

This number of channels indeed constitutes a medium term between the simplicity and “the economy” of the home formats and the richness, but also the complexity, of more important formats (16 channels for example).
Another difference compared to the (home) cinema, there is no standard arrangement : at most can one note the rather large representation of the circle arrangement, as well as the particular case of the cube, interesting but difficult to use !

The majority of the plugins in this category thus allow the free placement of the speakers, and can be also used like “modular” elements within a more important system. It is in particular the case for the processing plugins.
Some of them can also be used in a pentaphonic (5.0) environment by using the additional outputs as dynamic “auxiliary sends”
(see the tutorial 12).

Distorsion of the spatial mass of an octophonic input :

- eight inputs to eight outputs
It processes the positions of the eight audio inputs as a group which can be globally controlled :
- the horizontal and vertical distance (on the graphic) between each point (length of the line)
- the global direction of the line
- the radius and the angle of rotation
- the global position of the groupe
It is of course possible to control and automate each eight positions separately
Applications : change of the spatial arrangement of the channels inside an octophonic audio file,
easy internal animation etc.
Can also be used like eight mono input surround modules.
